The self-service car and public transportation now accessible with the same card

Montreal and Québec City – October 18, 2012 – Today, Mr. Benoît Robert, President and CEO of Communauto and Mr. Michel Labrecque, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Société de transport de Montreal (STM) and Mr. Raymond Dion, president of the Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC), announced the signing of an agreement for the implementation of a pilot project allowing transit users who also subscribe to carsharing to use their OPUS card to access Communauto cars as well as the STM and RTC transportation networks.

During this pilot project, which will last 4 months, 50 self-service Communauto vehicles, including 25 100% electric LEAFs, will be equipped with a new reading device which will authenticate the subscriber simply by swiping his OPUS card in front of the reader placed under the windshield.
If the results of the pilot project are conclusive, the entire Communauto fleet will gradually be equipped with these new readers starting in February 2013. In this second phase, Communauto subscribers will not only be able to use their OPUS card as identification to start the vehicle, but they will also be able to use their OPUS card to unlock the doors from outside the vehicle.
This project was made possible thanks to the commitment and collaboration of the transport organization authorities (Autorités organisatrices de transport) associated to OPUS (STM, RTC, AMT, STL, RTL, Société de transport de Lévis, AQTIM) and especially, with the support of the STM’s technical team.

Studies by the Université Laval and, more recently by the École Polytechnique de Montréal show that households who subscribe to carsharing use public transportation more and the car up to 4 times less than their neighbours who own one. The more we facilitate the combined use of public transportation and the self-service car, the more we will improve the quality of life and mobility of the citizens of Québec”, said Benoît Robert, President-CEO of Communauto.

This pilot project is a tangible illustration of our strategy to make the OPUS card a multimobility card or if you prefer, a Transportation Cocktail card. The big question for the next 10, 20 years is: Do I personally need to own a car that will spend 90% of its useful life parked? Carsharing and quality public transportation are inextricably linked. Thus it is our responsibility to co-promote and to make our respective mobility services more user-friendly and complementary”, said the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the STM, Mr. Michel Labrecque.

Moreover, it is completely in line with the vision of the City of Québec and of the Plan de mobilité durable so Québec may become a more appealing, prosperous and sustainable city. In conclusion, note that the new readers, added to the anti-theft and tracking systems already in place on all Communauto vehicles, are manufactured by ETL Électronique, a Quebec company who has equipped Communauto’s vehicles with on-board computers in the last years.
